Howdy folks,

I figure now's as good a time as any to introduce myself. I'm a Texas A&M graduate, with a math and computer science degree. I work at NASA as an IT project manager. I first started really getting interested in politics during the recent presidential race.

In order for folks to get a better understanding of what I believe and where I'm coming from politically, I've started writing some of it down on my web site. Soon, I'll include what I think about recent and upcoming League City political issues.

Feel free to leave any questions/comments you have on my site, too. Or here, if you prefer.

Welcome to the blog, Dustin!

Try using the "preview" feature. It's cumbersome, but it does allow you to edit before you publish.

As this campaign heats up, I hope you will come back and have some discussion here about your vision for League City.

Why did you choose the 5 race?

Dustin,

Tried posting on your site to no avail.
Anyway, good luck and have fun with this. You will learn a lot and will find great success if you stick to your principles......regardless of the final vote tally. I look forward to hearing more from you and appreciate you stepping forward to run.

@charles - I'm new to how Blogger works, I guess. I kinda expected an [Edit] button. I chose the 5 race, honestly, because I thought it offered the path of least resistance. I may be wrong in that decision... but I hope I'm not.

@casey - I just tested submitting a comment on my site. Picked a name, an email address, put in the comment and clicked [Save]. It worked fine (and have since deleted it). Try it again, if you don't mind. http://www.dustingooding.com/politics/discuss And if you can't get it to work again, give me a shout at dustingooding (@ gmail.com).

Reminder:

Candidates Forum This Evening

"The residents of Glen Cove will be hosting a forum for the candidates in the upcoming city council elections to introduce themselves and meet the residents of our neighborhood. This will be an informal gathering in our neighborhood park starting at 6:00 PM on Monday, March 9th."
(From a previous Heading)

Free hot dogs, sodas and chips.

Glen Cove Park is off FM 2094 about one mile east of Randall's at South Shore. From FM 2094 heading toward Kemah, turn left on Glen Cove and straight to the park. If you see Waterford Harbor or Watergate you have gone too far.

Ya'll Come.

Paul,
Please let us know how the forum went from your perspective.

Dustin,

I saw your website where you quote my favorite elected official, besides me: Ron Paul. Changing scope to municipal governance entails dropping many ideas about national issues that are not applicable to a city. For example, D and R differences don't matter. As far as property rights go, why is it bad that you let your backyard overgrow for months on end? If you own the home, don't you have the right to do whatever you want with it? Where do property rights stop and property responsibilities start? A more common issue in League City is land use. What are your thoughts on zoning? As a candidate, you need to get down to specifics in a hurry.

I think I found a way to liven up the next city council meeting!

@chuck - As I've said, I'm a strong believer in limited government that protects individual rights. This includes at the local level.

I'm not a fan of zoning as it is an infringement on private property rights, and I'll go into more detail on my website very soon.

Charles,

The forum went good. I think the attendance was about 30 to 40 including a few residents for surrounding neighborhoods and a few folks from west side of town.

Candidates present included: Phyllis Sanborn, Mick Phalen, Mike Lee, and Dustin Gooding. Mayor Randall was also in attendance.

I think the speakers did a good job. There were some tough questions from the crowd, but all went smoothly.

All candidates made statements about not accepting campaign contributions from developers or special interest groups. Ethics reform and charter revisions were a hot topic.

Phyllis made a commitment to support Mick and Mike in their bid for council. I found that to be newsworthy.

Topics of conversations included the usual: traffic, development, ethics, trashgate, gun range “gate”, and the Glen Cove fiasco. I believe the questions about Glen Cove issues did not come from my neighbors but citizens outside the neighborhood.

Jeff Hagen did an outstanding job inviting candidates, organizing the event, and acting as an impartial MC. Thanks to Dub Mixon for grilling the hot dogs and arranging for all the fix’ns. Dub is the hardest working guy for Glen Gove.

We started about 6:20 and questions and conversations went on until after dark.

I think we are very fortunate to have NEW candidates the caliber of Mick, Mike, and Dustin. I am amazed.

paul enjoyed it, but had to leave early to search for pat and tommie. Was unable to locate them. I even went to scotto's house and saw tc's truck and ph's buick parked in the drive way. As i walked to the door, someone turned off the lights after i rang the door bell. i'll keep hunting for them and will be sure to bring them to the next forum. keep us posted!

Neither Pat of Tommy was at the Scotto residence the night of the forum, both had prior work engagements. It is not a Buick, it is a Malibu, you must be one heck of a cop if you don't know the difference.

I am glad EK is taking PS, MF down the path to H E double toothpicks, Phylis, I hope you enjoy your new found time when you are off council, maybe you could move to Glen Cove with your 53 new friends.

The many faces of Pat Hallisey : EK will lead PS and MF down the path of HE double toothpicks. How clever and cute. Sybil, it is MP,not MF. You never get the facts straight. . . . . one of the many reasons you have lost 4 political campaigns . . . . you know more about politics than anyone in all of Galveston County. You and NB will make a great team on council. Go Pat, go Pat, you got my vote.

jcleague, lol. now we all know that was is not true. It's fact that ph does NOT work. Oh yeah, that's right, he does "consulting."

I certaily thought there would be some discussion about that.
