The Political Party

Tonight will be the last show of the “Political Party”. This is the weekly internet radio show that has been instrumental in helping expose some of bad deals that were made by the previous administration. But most importantly it gave the citizens a place to voice their opinions and discuss our problems. I congratulate and thank Mr. Jimmy Trojanowski who has done a magnificent job over the past three years securing guests and producing the show as well as Marc Edelman who has been the show’s hosts. These two individuals have given not only their time but time away from their family all in an effort to inform the citizens of our city. There are too many memorable quotes or thoughts that made the show a Wednesday night regular (if not a Friday download at work) but I must say I enjoyed being able to participate in that process. I thank Mr. Trojanowski, Mr. Edelman as well as all those that participated regularly. I understand that there are discussions presently with other individuals for a monthly or quarterly show. Stay tuned ………

Doggie Do?

On tonight’s council agenda I noticed that there is discussion about a dog park. In a time where our council is voting to increase your tax rate, freeze jobs and tighten each departments belt, some of the tax and spenders on the council want the citizens to pay 377,814.58 (just the estimate, we know how accurate estimates are remember BLD ) for a dog park. That estimate does not include M & O (maintenance and operations) funding for the up keep of the park. Is that a good fiscally conservative way to spend our increased city taxes? Now is not the time for such a pork barrel project. If you campaigned on being fiscally conservative with our tax dollars (as every council member has including Mr. Cones and Mr. Baron) then how can such a project even be considered ?

Charter Changes

The Mayor is proposing a new charter revision committee to look into several pressing issues. (click here for Galveston Daily news story) This is a normal function according to City ordinance ARTICLE 8, Sec. 2-387.

Terms of office; selection of presiding officer; other officers.

(a) The terms of office for all boards shall be for two years staggered, and shall expire on the 31st day of December, unless the length of the term is otherwise provided by the Charter, state statute, contracts, or corporation bylaws. At the time of adjusting the previous term expiration dates into the December 31st expiration date, the mayor shall be empowered to establish the terms of the various members to achieve conformance with this provision.”

Last year the old charter review committee handed in their final report. After one year it appears on a city agenda. We all agree the charter needs changing. Why is Mr. cones trying to revive the old committee? The old committee was appointed in Feb. 2007 and handed in their report in October 2007. It sat without consideration for one year and now Mr. Cones wants to do something?

The Lone Star Flight Museum needs help.

The Lone Star Flight Museum (lsfm.org) maintains one of the largest flying collections of antique aircraft in the nation at Scholes Field in Galveston. It is a significant benefit to local culture, entertainment, and education.

Like many things in Galveston, the flight museum was very badly damaged by hurricane Ike. Most of the flyable airplanes were flown out before the storm and critical museum records were saved, but the buildings and many of the tools, supplies, artifacts, and pieces of equipment were badly damaged or destroyed.

The museum is doing its best to recover, but as a non-profit organization it faces a very tough challenge and needs all the help it can get. Monetary donations are invaluable, as are donations of replacement equipment and tools, particularly specialized tools for maintaining older airplanes. What is needed most of all though is volunteer labor. The museum has a small professional staff, but even under normal circumstances must augment this with a large volunteer corps. Due to the huge amount of work necessary to rebuild the museum, volunteers are in even greater demand now. It is rewarding and educational work of benefit to the local community and the nation as well as a lot of fun.
Recovery efforts are ongoing 8 - 5, Monday through Saturday (except this weekend) and no particular skill or training is needed to get started. Just show up at the museum if you want to help.

Here are some links to pictures that I have taken of the recovery effort over the past few weeks:

Some of the airplanes that were evacuated will be coming home for the Wings Over Houston air show this weekend. If you are interested, it would be another great opportunity to meet folks from the museum and find out how you can help.
(Of course, I will be glad to help you get involved as well.)

thanks,
Jeff Hagen

Freedom of Speech

Good Morning League City,
I have started this blog because Mr. Edelman has bent over for Mr. Cones and has shut down the blog our citizens used for information. (just like the internet radio show) Unlike Mr. Edelman I am not influenced by anyone (except my wife) and therefore I am willing to let the voice of ALL the people be heard. (Freedom of speech)

If you wish to be a contributor (by placing a thread for discussion) please feel free to email me and you will be added on to the list.

Thanks for reading.
