Freedom of Speech

Good Morning League City,
I have started this blog because Mr. Edelman has bent over for Mr. Cones and has shut down the blog our citizens used for information. (just like the internet radio show) Unlike Mr. Edelman I am not influenced by anyone (except my wife) and therefore I am willing to let the voice of ALL the people be heard. (Freedom of speech)

If you wish to be a contributor (by placing a thread for discussion) please feel free to email me and you will be added on to the list.

Thanks for reading.
Chris Mallios

I was extremely disappointed to see the blog taken down this morning. I can't say I didn't see this coming with his recent posts... but it still saddens me to see it happen.

Marc has executed an immeasurable disservice to League City, and should be deeply ashamed of himself. I believe that his removal/lock-down of the blog not only represents the kind of person Marc is, but strongly reflects the integrity of the entire Ballot Cast Network.

I can only hope that Jimmy will stand up to Marc's actions and take steps to restore the integrity of their network.

Richard,
I don't believe the blog action is representive of who he is, but rather who he has become.

Just as Rehoabom had to make a choice to either listen to the wisdom of his father Solomon's advisors or listen to his selfish friends, he chose his friends. The result was the division of Israel.

So too Mark has chosen blindly listen to his friends. Remember that I put him on the spot and asked him when was the last time he publically disagreed with TC in regards to a city matter. Mark had no answer. It was CJM who had to chime in that Marc supported the anti-Jerry for mayor. Not a very strong disagreement if you ask me.

CJM - Good luck with this blog. I certainly hope that you can find a way to temper (if only slightly) that all out blustery way you have of raising issues and concerns. It will definitely add credibility to your arguments and win greater support from the laizze faire independents of LC.

BHL,
I appreciate your thoughts, I will attempt to be less blustery and I will be fair to all. I will allow all (including Mr. Edelman) to have their say.

Chris,

The mates wanted me to convey our support to you. As you know we stick to the code and one of the codes has always been freedom of speech.

While Marc is a good guy, he unfortunately has been listening to the wrong people. Tommy Cones has been a poor example of a councilman since he has taken developer money and become close friends with Sciotto. He no longer represents League City residents interest in our opinion and will be voted out in the spring......

The good news is people like you realize we all have a voice and we vote.

Thanks for setting up the blog so quickly. May the sails of free speech always fly high in our home port League City......

My parrot tells me Tommy Cones bud Chris Reed may actually decide to discuss budget issues & abuse prevention in League City......If Reed is still around in the spring... as the winds of change continue to blow even after Hurrican IKE.....7 months and counting

Chris,
It was just a matter of time before Marc shut down HIS blog.

Marc and his crew have been very consistent in their efforts to benefit TC and Friends.

With upcoming city elections there must be great concern.

The truth is out there.

Thanks Chris!

BHL may be right. There was an unexplainable change in Marc recently. I would like to accept Jimmy's explanation, that he and Marc are simply burned out. Still, Marc could have closed the blog down more gracefully, as he did the internet show. Or perhaps turned it over to someone else.
Whatever impression he has left with his sudden exit, I want to remember the years of dedication that he gave, and his real and worthy contributions for which he got no compensation. It's just too bad, but it looks like the forces of the dark side have taken another good man. Let us vow to slay them in the spring. And should Marc be standing with them then, let him too feel the sword. Aarrgh.

Paul M.,

You are right. Marc has done a lot of hard work for no reward (and a lot of grief) on behalf of our community with his years of service running the old blog. We all owe him thanks for that.

You are also correct that Marc (however much good he may have done) has now erred badly in the way he has handled the old blog recently. I hope that he will offer us some explanation for his mysterious behavior, but whatever he says I doubt that we will all be satisfied.

All we can do is our best to move on from here with this new blog.

It is very hard to be a business owner in a community like LC. Marc is getting pressure from all sides, and he has held up pretty well. His heart is in the right place. As for the blog and the show, they have been talking for months about shutting the whole thing down. In the beginning, it was difficult to navigate, AND it was a lot of fun. Now it is too much of a pain in the ass, and not near as much fun as it used to be.(It's hard to please everybody.) I'm not so sure that I would stay with a job like that, especially for NO pay. I am proud of Marc, and Jimmy for sticking it out as long as they did. Cheers !!!!!! Thanks CJM, for taking the helm, God bless and good luck............

Hey guys...all drama aside....it is probably true that he is burnt out. I mean he really put alot of time into the blog and I commend him for that. I think he wanted it to be an educational tool and his posts reflect that.

I am sure that as a business owner it probably isn't best to be too publicly involved in this stuff. I found that out.

I will follow this blog, though. Heck, we might as well just throw out the educational part and go full force into sensationalism and hearsay. Now that's entertainment.

Just kidding...hopefully there is some informational stuff in here that isn't TOO slanted.

Way to go Chris! The time is always right for change. Best wishes with this brand new Blog!

Richard M, is there some way we can install a PH filter?

Regardless of the circumstances, I have never seen more drama from grown men in my life. That in itself explains much as to why League City's political climate is so difficult to weather.

BHL, Sure! Just let me host the blog! lol ;)

Charles,
404... Wow, so it seems Marc may have removed the blog from the Ballot Cast server itself...

I had heard from Jimmy via email that Marc has been doing this while on vacation, and he wasn't sure as to Marc's reason for shutting down the blog like this. Jimmy agreed to let it stay locked down until they could have a chance to speak when he gets back (Wednesday?) ... but it would seem as if it really didn't matter now.

At the very least, I think that Marc should at least keep the old blog up, disable comments, and leave a note that redirects people to the new blog. That way it can be kept running as an archive (history shouldn't be deleted!). He could even do this without hosting it on the Ballot Cast server (no cost to him for hosting).

Is there someone on this blog that can get Chris Reed to resign?

Will another vote on city council see him fired? I for one will be watching channel 16.

Yes we know what happen.

Yes, Chris that comment was for you. Mallios or Reed take your pick.

I do appreciate CM for having accurate information when he post. I do not believe I have read anything that did not turn out to be the truth. The truth will set you free.

Any Media that discusses the activites of Goverment(other than National Defense) that is shut down,is a bad thing. I have always wondered since I moved here about the lack of a town paper. The Houston Cronicle says Almost nothing about League City except for puff peices. And The Galviston Daily News lumps us in with all the other towns even though we are bigger than Galviston. The result is only a few items of city goverment are tracked or reported. The blog could be the only place where the actions of League City govt can be tracked. Is there proof Mr. Cones was behind the shut down? Mr. Cones has done or said things in council on record during the last 3 or 4 years than has made me question his Leadership. He has been on both sides of an issue at different times. Several years ago he got up and lead the charge to keep the tax rate the same citing the need to pay for future capital projects the Mayor Shultz machine ran over him. Now he opposes the mayor who wants to get the tax rate back to what it was? He even had the stupidity to suggest we dip into the disaster fund (the 120 day Reserve) and no one on council called him on it. This happened days before Ike. I bet he very much wants thouse two little tid bits which are on tape for anybody who wants to dig it up supressed. I for one would not toss such comment about Mr. Cones without some proof such as Mr. Edelman conferming it. Mr. Cones has plenty of sins on record he must account for for example more than once over the last two years he openly sponsored developers to appear before council to "get a break" on various impact fees for developments that were in various stages of creation. The regular League City Taxpayer had to pick up the tab for this lost income.
Its that sort of stuff that should angure about Mr. Cones

Babs said...

Forest - you raise an interesting issue. You might be interested to see Mr Cones expenditures of taxpayer money, ie travel expenses. An open records request with the City Secretary is all it takes. You will surely find it very enlightening!

The people that Mallios calls friends are just "fair weather Friends" There support was not really support. Here is Jeff Hagens endorsement for Mayor of Toni Randall
"In the race for mayor, it is obvious that one can not rely on Jerry Shults to deliver even the minimum integrity necessary for good government. I have met both of his opponents, Toni Randall and Chris Mallios. I am convinced that both are honest and well meaning folks who will do their best to restore integrity in League City. Ms. Randall would bring extensive and successful business experience and Mr. Mallios would bring great experience and understanding of local politics and government. Given that our municipal electoral process is non-partisan and based on having run-offs, I believe that a vote for either of these candidates would be an excellent improvement over the present status quo. What must be avoided is to vote for reelection of Shults or to not vote at all."

Not what I call a sterling Chris Mallios endorsement. Sure sounds like he is saying Randall has business experience, Mallios just knows what is going on. What elese would you expect from that bunch?

JC League: I would call that sort of friendship a friendship that is based on mutual respect. (Something that seems harder and harder to come by these days.) Not a friendship that is based on what one can do for the other, but on the knowledge that each one is an individual, and each one respects the right of the other to express their individual opinion, even though they may not always be in agreement. That is the kind of friend I would want.

Chris John Mallios said...

League,
Good to see you made the change. Here is the difference to me. A friend does not hold a friends political stance against them. A person has the right to voice their opinions. The election is over. I could care less who voted for who at this point. It’s time we all work together for the betterment of our city. This is only politics it’s not life and death. If you really want to have an impact then you might want to consider a run for office. It will be here quicker than you think. (It IS TRUE that time flies the older you get)

Pat,

The old blog is not up. If you go there, all you will see is Marc's farewell message. (Which is frankly rather tacky.)

You all should rename this blog, bloggers against cones! Mark and Jimmy did the right thing by closing down there blog. They obviously have morals and scruples.

Jeff Hagen said...

Pat,

Are you saying that Marc shut down his blog because he wanted to protect Tommy Cones? Interesting. I was wondering what the real reason was; thanks for clearing it up.

Jeff

Anonymous said...

I agree the statement left on the old blog is quite tacky. Also, it's sad that Marc would choose to wipe out so much history from the blog. Locking them would be one thing, but to delete everything? Sad, really sad...

I'm not a lawyer, but I also don't believe shutting down a blog out of the fear of libel/liable comments is a valid excuse. Especially when there has been numerous legal cases where hosts are found non-liable when it comes to discussions in blogs, forums, chat rooms, etc.. There is also a federal law, Section 230, to protect hosts and content providers. To top it off, all of the comments are hosted by blogger, not by the ballot cast network server.

I can understand if they didn't want to run the blog anymore out of stress, boredom, or other personal reasons; but to me the liability stance was a cop-out.

charles meyer said...

It was a cop-out, Richard. One of many dating back to the last election.

Jeff Hagen said...

Richard & Charles,

You guys are right. I think we all suspected what it was, but we have Pat right here telling us directly that it was shut down to protect Tommy Cones. Straight from the horse's... mouth.

Freedom of speech, or bait and switch?

With the old blog closed down, I looked to see if Ballotcast Net (leaguecity.biz) might be forwarding people to the new (this) one. No, there's a link to "the" league city blog (the name of this one), but it hijacks folks back to Marc's old blog, which is just a wilting place holder now. There is also a link to some Tim Holloway dream to unseat the mayor, but that's nothing but an empty place holder too.
Finally, there is a link to Terry (aka Max) Kelly's "you've been left" blog. But it's really Max himself who's been left. He became a caricature of himself. His material and schtick died. It's kind of sad to see has-beens try to make comebacks; few succeed.
