Can you hear the citizens now?

With an overwhelming majority (69-70%) the voters of League City said NO to the wide open developer deals that has placed our city in the position we are in today.

The Unoffical returns
Council Position 3
Thomas Cones ...... 1171 (31.44%)
Mick Phalen .......... 2553 (68.56%)

Council Position 4
Mike Lee................ 2626 (70.46%)
Pat Hallisey............ 1101 (29.54%)

Council Position 5
Phyllis Sanborn...... 2571 (69.28%)
Ed Stations............ 892 (24.04%)
Dustin Gooding........ 248 ( 6.68%)

This election says a lot about many things. One states very loudly that Mr. Baron and his friends could not muster the “troops” they thought they could. It also says that not one newly elected council member received any votes from Mr. Baron or his friends. Any type of discussion to the contrary is not factually based and is only an attempt to hide the truth.

One last thought go to Mallios.com and look at the citizens polls and you will see what the citizens think. It has been very accurate over the last few years in showing what the citizens think and how they have voted.

What did this election say to you?

Mr. Mallios,

Because I have not kept up with LC politics lately, can you explain why you reference Mr. Baron in a negative fashion. I think the election results says a lot and gives LC politics a chance to move forward in a positive direction. Maybe just maybe everyone can work together for the citizens of this city.

Chris John Mallios said...

Mr. Aldridge,
I referenced Mr. Baron because I understand he has boldly told many individuals that he has “control” over certain voting blocks in this town. Fact is the numbers show that he does not. Working together and moving our city forward will now happen. If Mr. Baron wants to start working with the citizens and following their will he could start by making that dog park into a field for practice(baseball, soccer football ect.) for the children of League City. You see Mr. Aldridge I believe that the will of the people in the park survey should be adhered to. Mr. Baron’s pet project was ranked 23rd, nowhere near the top. Not only that the county was considering a dog park and the cost could have been used for higher ranking park projects. Many of us, who follow these things, understand how Mr. Baron was able to get the votes needed. That is just one example. Another example is what I believe to be his lack of respect for our mayor and a manipulation of our city charter. I could go on but we can start there. Mr. Baron had an opportunity to work for the people unfortunately he chose to work with Cones and Nelson. I believe that when a public servant makes a poor choice based on personal preference instead of the will of the people they should be held accountable. Look at his voting record it speaks for itself.

Fair enough and thanks for the explanation.

i just can help this, but has anyone heard from JC League, markie or janice ?

just came across some old remarks from markies' former blog in which ph states, "I don't know who this joana sharp is, never heard of her." Hey PH, NOW DO YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS ?

came across another letter dated 2006 that was emailed to me yesterday in which you referred to Mr. Lee, "just another mindless candidate." question: PH, guess which mindless candidate send you packing?

yes, we are gloating and have a right to.

Jeff Hagen said...

Chris, you asked what did this election say to each of us. I apologize in advance for this moment of gloating, but...

2 & 1/2 years ago I first came to a council meeting with my neighbors to complain about a problem the city had caused in our neighborhood and asked the city to work with us to find a compromise fair to all.

We were ignored. Only council members Mike Barber and Phyllis Sanborn cared about our plight. As we came to find out the hard way, the rest of the city government at the time spurned us at every turn and mocked us behind our backs. The story we heard was they said they could do anything they wanted to us because none of us voted. Maybe that was true three years ago, but my how times have changed.

For the past two years, we have held a candidate's forum in Glen Cove to which all candidates were invited. Some have chosen not to appear. The year before that there was an impromptu event that some of the candidates showed up for.

Maybe some will call it coincidence (and maybe it is), but it should be noted that for the past three years every candidate in a city election that has NOT appeared at the Glen Cove forums has gone on to a crushing defeat.

We will hold a candidate forum again next year. All candidates are invited.

Jeff

On a separate note,

I understand the euphoria of the moment. I certainly feel it myself. There is so much to celebrate now.

However, I hope that we will all be careful to restrain ourselves from mocking former opponents. The people have clearly decided the new course this city should take; I don't feel the need to pile on with mockery.

In particular, despite my personal disappointment with some of the positions Mr. Edelman has taken and my prolific sparring with him on those issues, I still have immense respect for the important business he has built in this community and this tradition of public discourse that he helped to start.

I'm hoping we can start this wonderful new era in League City by being gracious in victory.

No one picks on Mr. Baron. He put the spotlight on himself by campaigning for Ethics Reform and Accountability to the voters.
Three months in office and the taxpayers have a $379,000 recreational park for dogs, championed by Baron, Cones, Samuelson, and Nelson. Accountability?
Mr. Baron did receive a notice from the TEC with alleged violations; and 1 year later the voters are still waiting for an Ethics Reform Ordinance which "he demanded".
Don't be too hard on Chris John, he accurately reflects the opinions of many disappointed and disillusioned voters (who no longer support Mr. Baron).

Regarding the election,
Mr. Cones and Mr.Hallisey can follow the path of their friend. They can co-author a book together. Maybe they can learn something from www.jerryshults.com

The election results were a great beginning for Mayor Randall and council. The voting block of 4 is gone. This council will be accountable to the taxpayers' dollars. Pet projects will be carefully scutinized, City ranked surveys will not be ignored, and special interests can find another city . League City is no longer for sale.

Ms GCR - Thanks for the link. I loved the title to herr jerr's book. It's perfect.

Like everything else Jerr was about, nothing more than an illusion and eventually everyone saw through it. I guess by trying to peddle a book and claiming to be an "expert" Jerr hs reduced himself to conman.

I'm pretty happy with the results but that doesnt mean these three folks have a free pass going forward! There are a lot of us paying attention now. Actions speak louder than words! I might even show up to a few city council meetings now and then.

Dr. Oz said...

What does the election say to me: LC voters have opened their eyes to 'good old boy' League City politics. They won't stand for any more back-door secret deals to line developers pockets or sweet contracts handed to their buddies. City government will, at long last, FINALLY be responsive to all the people (as it should be), not an exclusive club where members can abuse their power to tear down bridges, close gun ranges, etc. The voters recognize dishonesty, deceit and corruption when they see it. Incoming council members represent a breath of fresh air for our city - and how the winds of change have swiftly blown away those who would (and have) selfishly represented themselves instead of the citizens!!

markie, spokesman for the CaSH boys: you may want to get with your boys and tell them to make a correction on their financial reports. According to ph's report, he received a $250.00 contribution from ed station on 4-5-09, however, on ed station's report, he makes no notion of his $250.00 contribution to ph? SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, who's telling the truth and who's deceiving the public?

thks Dr. oz for those words

I was going to get Jimmy and go try to cheer Marc up with some flowers and booze, but Jimmy has been incognito all day too. He doesn't answer the door, he doesn't answer the phone... Hmmm.

Dear LCPD,
Mr. Station could have paid the donation to Pat from his personal funds. I believe this is the most likely explanation as Mr. Station's campaign was self funded so his personal money and campaign money were from the same source. Therefore, as long as Mr. Station's donation was not from his campaign account he does not have to report it on his campaign finance report.

I want to thank all the candidates who ran. It takes guts, effort and commitment to go through this process. I want to thank Tommy Cones for his seven years of service to the community as a council person.

I wish all three winners the best moving forward. I hope along with their victory they have wisdom and foresight and lead this community in the right direction. If this council and Mayor fail, it hurts all of us.

Mrs. Glenn Clove Resident,

I only aksed Mr. Mallios to explain his negative thoughts about Mr. Baron. I do not believe I was "too hard" on Mr. Mallios. I understand Mr. Mallios' explanation and appreciate it.

P.S. I belive we have similar thoughts on a lot of subjects.

I will second Marc Edelman's commits. Tommy Cone's has served his community; which is more than I have done! I see him at St. Mary's ever Sunday. He always has a smile on his face and he did again this morning. I do not personally know the man. However right or wrong; he went out there and did what he thought was right. It does take a lot of guts to put up with the scrutiny of folks like us! We should all be watching our elected officials a little closer!

lcpd said...

mike, i agree we should be watching our officals closer: thus the reason tc was not re-elected and sanborn was.

"I'm hoping we can start this wonderful new era in League City by being gracious in victory."

I would add and in defeat as well.

@ME

"If this council and Mayor fail, it hurts all of us."

If that it true today, then it was true one year ago.

This mayor deserves the opportunity to lead without all of the obstacles being tossed in her way by individuals with large agendas and small ideals.

Various types of Service....

Mike,
Yes Tommy has served for 7 years on council and I remember voting for him once upon a time. Not only has he served on council he has served many outside our community as a Houston Fire Fighter - kudos to him for that.
All shoudl agree with Marc too about service to the community being important and that we should respect those in a position of service. BUT, we expected (and deserved) responsible, honest service with OUR best interests at heart.

Tommy's "totally devoted" service - to his developer friends - was in blatant disregard for the basic needs of the citizens already living here. In an ironic twist, he was responsible for delaying Fire Fighting and EMS response to Glen Cove residents when he gave away a vital bridge linking them to city emergency services back in 2005- via a secret city hall deal. That turned out to be Mayor Randall's initial motivation to get involved in city politics (So, another irony here - we have Tommy to thank for her service...).

Perhaps he goes to church to ask forgiveness for "serving" up the city to his developer campaign contributors?? Just because he's in a position of service doesn't mean he's a servant to (and for) us. So... thanks for Tommy's good service deeds, but shame on him too for the bad! Unfortunately, you can't separate the two...

And those are only some of the names. There is a core of activists, concerned citizens, that I have worked with in the last three or four elections. I don't even know (and fail to remember) all their names, but I see the same faces again and again. They have no hidden agendas that I've ever seen, but fairness and the general good for all. And it's been paying off too. Too bad Washington - often even Austin - are out of our reach, or we could really clean up some mess.

I would like to thank Tommy Cones for his many years of service to our community. I would like to thank Pat Hallisey for giving me a choice of candidates in the race for council position 4. I would like to thank Mick Phalen, Mike Lee & Dustin Gooding for taking the time to meet with me one-on-one. It’s a lot to ask of a candidate to take time out of a busy campaign to meet with a single individual. I would like to thank Jeff Hagen for helping me reach Dustin and arrange for my meeting with him. I would also like to thank Chris Mallios for helping arrange for my meeting with Mick & Mike (and springing for lunch).

I wish our new council members the very best. As they prosper in their new positions, so does the rest of our city.

Looks like Nick Scotto (dba Cypress Bay) has managed to royally piss off all his neighbors on the other side of his development now. Don't be surprised to see a whole new group of people signing on to the Glen Cove vs League City lawsuit. Or filing one of their own.
And before it's all over, Tommy Cones may see his election defeat as a blessing in disguise.

League City Says said...

Yes, congrads to Phyllis, Mike and Mick on their election. When do they take office?

I hear Scotto put up a 10 foot fence to block the view of the canel in Marino del Sol just because he could. No other reason. He put a fence behind their wrought iron fences, just because he could. Now isn't that chicken cit. What next? That really is going above anything else he has done. I guess he doesn't want them to look at the canel anymore. Mr. Scotto, can you answer that question.

Nuts where are you? Hope you are resting well in one of the shady oaks.

BHL said...

aren't there regulations regarding fencing around developments, or can any joe blow developer put up whatever he wants wherever he wants?

P. Moratto said...

It came up at council meeting Tuesday night, and some of these questions were answered. It remains to be seen if a tag will go up ordering a halt to construction and some kind of "show cause" under threat of fine. You know, the kind of thing that typically happens to any little guy who does something like that. The city is already on record saying that it's a violation, just on the drainage aspect.
