Traffic Trauma?

Does League City need a traffic light 800 feet away from the intersection of FM 2094 and Twin Oaks Boulevard? Read what Thayer Evans wrote and let us know what you think. If you are so inclined you may voice your opinion to our city administration by clicking here. Really want to understand the master plan? During the October 7 meeting, hosted by the Goodman Corporation, one resident had an interesting suggestion.

The extension of Space Center Blvd; across Clear Lake connecting with NASA Road 1 (NASA Parkway) & 2094. The access point would be just west of South Shore Harbor Drive.

This idea seem well thought out and it would relieve much of the congestion at the 5 corners crossing of 518/270/2094. It would also serve as an evacuation route, getting to I45 & points North connecting with the Webster (NASA) Bypass.

The traffic engineer seem interested but it would mean a bridge across Clear Lake that may not get the approval of all of the Communities it affects, not just LC but all of the other communities that surround Clear Lake.

FUBAR,

Actually, the idea for a new bridge was my suggestion. I am glad you find it interesting, but I must be clear that I am not a traffic engineer and it is just that - a suggestion. The traffic experts would have to do their studies before we could know if it really makes sense or not.
(BTW, I was thinking that the southern connection would be just east of South Shore Harbor Drive, at the north end of Enterprise.)
Thanks for bringing it up, I've been curious what others might think of the idea.

That was a good Idea Jeff, I liked it and thought it took imagination to come up with the idea.

There should be no problems for two or more signals as long as the timing (Sync) is maintain between them.

However, LC does not have a good history for maintaining Timing Sync between Stop Lights, thus it would be a bad Idea to have 2 Stoplights so close together on 2094 if traffic is to move at its current turtle's pace and not end up being at a snails pace.

Someone form the other blog on a thread suggested a system that might work called WiMax. Since it was suggested, I have seen nothing more about it. Unless all signals North/South & East/West are linked together, then adding more lights will just make traffic even worse along 2094.

Yes, Jeff's idea was well thought out, because it utilizes the shortest distance across the lake, shorter than I expected when he point that out to me.
Has anyone heard more about the 270 bypass? My understanding is that it was decided, but I haven't seen any work start.
Now that the SH96/IH45 clusterfreak is fixed, we also need another bypass, connecting Bay Area Boulevard (at FM518) to Brittany Bay Boulevard (at or near Landing Boulevard). The land for it is perfectly located and looks undeveloped on the map; and such a bypass would have to cross only one little street, Carefree Drive. This could go a long way in diverting one of our worst congestion logjams, W. Main.

At the October meeting, the idea for the 270 Bypass was presented but no firm plans had been created and funding was still many years away.

Contact The Goodman Corp if you are interested in finding out more as they made the presentation in October: Kellie Buchanan 713.951.7951

Additionally, the LC Mobility Website is to gather additional input for the LC Mobility Study.

Paul,

Bay Area @ 518 does connect with Brittany Bay. I use that road on my way to work every morning.

This most serious accident occurred in May 2008 on FM 2094 at the intersection of Twin Oaks Boulevard. I saw Life Flight leaving the scene and was told several of the car’s occupants had serious injuries.

I am no traffic expert, but I do travel most areas of LC on a regular basis. It is not unusually for me to negotiate the FM 2094 and Twin Oaks Boulevard intersection six or eight times a day. In my opinion this is the most dangerous intersection in the city.

The problem is not only the four-way configuration but the poor visibility. The gated entrance to the apartments allows only for four or five cars. A back up at the apartment entrance severely limits the visibility of the outbound apartment vehicles. Vehicles exiting Marina Del Sol have limited visibility due to the Marian Del Sol entrance marquee. During peak traffic the turning lanes along FM 2094 are often “stacked-up” in both directions with cars in the center of the median. With a single SUV in the intersection or in the turning lane the opposing turn traffic will have very restricted view, if any, of the on coming traffic.

I have witnessed many near accidents and have seen residue of a number of accidents.

It is only a matter of time before there are fatalities at the intersection. I strongly support the Marina Del Sol HOA in the plea for a light at this intersection.

I know, Dustin, but it's a dog leg jutting in the wrong direction at its joint (at the golf links), where a straighter and smoother transition appears to be feasible.

Bay Area Blvd. does connect with Brittany Bay/League City Pkwy, but it narrows to two lane with a 30MPH speed limit through the Rustic Oaks Subdivision.

Mark Keehn said...

Paul - In addition to crossing Candlewood, your proposed route would also bisect Rustic Oaks Park.

P. Moratto said...

No, what I had in mind was to go southeast from BAB at 518, south of Pine Lake, between Candlewood and Waverly Canyon (or on one of them), to intersect Brittany Bay somewhere around Tuscarora Court. It would only have to cross one street that way, Carefree Drive.

@Paul

There's a school there. Gilmore Elementary sits smack dab between Tuscarora Court and the end of the run-off creek between Candlewood and Waverly. http://tr.im/JJBU
